
Poisonous Items Around The Home
Make absolutely sure you are willing to give up some common household items before you decide to adopt or buy a bird for your home. A birds respiratory system is very complex and sensitive. The following list contains just a few items that WILL KILL YOUR BIRD.
Air fresheners, especially plug in types
Aerosolized products - NEVER USE ANY KIND
Appliances with Teflon, i.e. Bread machines, Hair dryers, irons, Self-Cleaning ovens
Carbon Monoxide (it is a good idea to get a monitor)
Carpet powders and some carpet cleaners
Cigarette, Cigar, Pipe, Incense and Charcoal smoke (if you smoke outside your home you MUST wash & scrub your hands very well, just a small amount of nicotine residue from your hands will kill your bird)
Cookware with Teflon & non-stick PTFE surfaces
Paint fumes, lead paint chips, and aerosolized paint
Leather conditioner, and some shoe polishes
Loud noises (this will cause panic & a heart attack)
Metals - Anything with copper, lead, mercury, or zinc
Pine cleaners or anything with pine scent in it
Scented candles or toilet paper
